Coronavirus Information, Resources

The City of Coronado has been asked what it is doing to prepare for and guard against the coronavirus. The City is prepared. Public Safety officials with the City participate in a daily conference call with San Diego County’s Office of Emergency Services to stay up to date on the outbreak. There is information available to help local jurisdictions prepare for and open their emergency operations centers, if necessary.

The Coronado Fire Services and Police Services departments have been sharing informational materials from the County and other agencies with staff to guide paramedics, police and other personnel in the proper procedures for dealing with potential cases. This includes efforts to minimize the potential number of personnel exposed, the use of personal protective equipment and ventilation system use in the ambulances. In addition, Fire personnel have procedures in place on how to coordinate with a receiving hospital to ensure the patient is met outside to minimize exposures. Fire Services has increased its supplies of appropriate protective gear.

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses found in animals and humans. In people, the viruses are known to cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe respiratory diseases. A new strain has been identified as causing the outbreak that was reported in Wuhan, China, in December 2019.

According to the World Health Organization, infection with the new strain can cause mild cold-like symptoms but it can also be more severe with older people or those with pre-existing medical conditions, such as heart disease. The coronavirus can be transmitted from person to person. For more on the coronavirus, how it spreads and symptoms, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website. Here is a Q&A on the World Health Organization website.
